What is NEPAS doing in IMCI?

Through the years it has been clearly seen the important role paediatricians and their societies can play in adThrough the years it has been clearly seen the important role paediatricians and their societies can play in advocacy, technical support, training, monitoring supervision and research in interventions to improve child health in developing countries. NEPAS has always supported the various child health strategies developed by WHO, UNICEF and other international agencies and played active role in various capacities. Naturally IMCI strategy is on exception and right from the start paediatricians have played important role in the various phases for the successful implementation and expansion of the new holistic to integrated approach to childhealth.

History of IMCI and paediatricians in Nepal

  1. Initial planning in 1995
    Paediatricians have been actively involved right from the initial stages of planning in IMCI.
  2. August 1997
    First group paediatricians trained in IMCI in the first inter country training in IMCI held in kathmandu at the Kathmandu Hotel and Kanti Children's Hospital with Dr. Bijaya Kumar of WHO SEARO as the course director.
  3. November 1997
    First national level training for Nepalese participants conducted with modules and guides translated in Nepali with participants mostly from Child Health Division, Kanti Children's Hospital and two participants from Mohattari district for field testing.
  4. December 1997
    Five days facilitator training, the first of its kind for facilitator from Nepal was conducted by WHO, Geneva as part of testing the course directors guide.
  5. December 1997
    The first batch of training conducted in Janakpur Zonal Hospital for health workers of Mohattari district the first district to implement IMCI. Subsequently several batches trained to completed training of most of the manpower of the health facilities of that district. Most of the facilitator for the training were paediatricians who are members of NEPAS.
  6. April 1998
    First group of paediatricians from Nepal were selected to participate as facilitator for the first inter country course in IMCI held in Semarang Indonesia Subsequently our paediatricians participated as facilitators for courses held in New Dehli, Yangon, Senerang, Thimpu and Dhaka.
  7. April 9, 2001
    NEPAS selected during bidding for conducting training of health workers in Dhanusha district and subsequently NEPS continuous to conduct training in various districts.
    " IMCI in Dhanusha April 9 to July 29, 2001. Trained 183 health workers.
    " IMCI in Mohattari August 1 to September 11, 2001. Trained 93 health workers.
    " IMCI in Kaski September 16 to November 11, 2002. Trained 95 health workers.
    " IMCI in Rupandehi August 12 to January 15, 2002. Trained 144 health workers.
    " IMCI in Bara April 8 to August 5, 2002. Trained 204 health workers.
    " IMCI in Dhangadi July 21 to September 30, 2002. Trained 120 health workers.
    " IMCI in Dhankuta August 25 to November 2, 2002. Trained 110 health workers.
    " IMCI in Banke is starting from October 18 and will be running up to January 10, 2003.
